POSITION DESCRIPTION: Director of Lifespan Religious Education (DLRE)
PURPOSE: Ensure a diverse and robust lifespan religious
education for our congregation. Engage the full church community in
affirming the importance and worth of religious education to our
members. Coordinate the implementation of educational programs.
TIME REQUIREMENTS:
- Full-time position (average of twelve units a week) with flexible hours.
- A portion of time should be allotted for posted, regular office hours.
- Professional development and district events as required.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES:
- Provide supervision of paid and volunteer staff for Sunday
morning programs, Wednesday Night at the Church, and all Youth
activities.
- Supervise Nursery Attendant (Sunday only) and recruit volunteer help when needed.
- Supervise Youth Director.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
- The DLRE reports to the Board of Directors.
BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversight of RE operating budget and associated accounts as approved by the Board of Directors.
RELATIONSHIPS:
- With RE Council: Assist in recruitment of council members;
provide support to Chair; promote exchange of ideas, assistance, and
resources as needed for RE children's, youth and adult programs.
- With
RE Faculty and Staff: Work with Council in recruitment and nurturing of
capable participants. Work with Council to provide training and
orientation programs for faculty and staff.
- With
Congregation: Participate in congregational life and Sunday services to
maintain a familiar, respected, and vocal symbol of the Religious
Education Program.
- With Youth Director: Supervise Youth Director and assist in development and implementation of curriculum and policy.
- With Community: Welcome community members to participate in religious education.
REPORTING:
- Attend monthly meetings and prepare reports to RE Council concerning activities, plans and challenges.
- Attend monthly meetings and prepare reports to the Board of Directors. Provide annual prospectus.
- Prepare regular column on RE program in bi-weekly newsletter to Congregation.
- Attend monthly Worship Committee meetings.
- Maintain regular contact with minister and church staff.
- Prepare required UUA reports.
PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Recruit and administer pool of capable volunteers to teach RE programs.
- Coordinate development and implementation of curriculum for RE programs.
- Coordinate at least one intergenerational Sunday service per year.
- Occasionally conduct congregational services.
- Maintain availability of RE support resources (curriculum library, equipment, supplies, teaching space and related materials).
- Organize classes as appropriate to enrolled students and available volunteers.
- Track enrollment and attendance records for children and youth programs.
- Assist Council in planning and executing special events.
- Implement Child Protection Policy and keep abreast of safety and liability issues.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
- Participate in Houston Area Religious Educators (HARE).
- Annual attendance to religious education Conferences.
- Attend Liberal Religious Educators Association (LREDA) activities as appropriate.
- UUA religious education credentialing workshops and programs.
SALARY:
- Commensurate with experience.
EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE LEVEL:
- Ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree, prior paid experience as a religious educator and be credentialed by the UUA.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to Unitarian Universalist principles and philosophies.
- Volunteer management skills.
- Relational, organizational, administrative, communication and technical skills.
