Thoughts From Matt
updated April 28, 2008

I am back from sabbatical as of May 1st. My time away has been restful, productive, reflective, and insightful. I'm returning renewed in spirit, and ready to realize an exciting new chapter in BAUUC's history as we get closer to completing our building expansion, hiring a new DLRE, and as we continue to grow in all ways, especially spiritually. Just as BAUUC is changing, my role will be changing slightly too. This is natural and necessary as congregations change size--their ministers and other leaders must adjust to fit new ways being and doing. I will be doing a little more of some things and a little less of others.

Also, as I transition back into congregational life, our student minister, Christina Branum-Martin will be transitioning out of her ministerial role. Her official "praxis" as student minister is complete, as is her sabbatical fill-in. When you see Christina, please thank her for all that she has done. It is now time to let her transition back to being a member of the congregation and to concentrate on her seminary studies. Although she is no longer officially our "student minister," her ministerial journey continues and I will be calling on her from time to time for ministerial opportunities.

I will be in the pulpit every week for eight Sundays between May 4 and June 22. Remember that we will be worshipping in one service at 10:30 at Space Center Intermediate School beginning on May 11th while our sanctuary is renovated. We should be back at BAUUC sometime in June.

The building renovations will also impact my office hours and overall schedule. I am without an office for now. I will "camp out" at the church wherever there is space until August when the expansion is complete, but will often be working from home because that is where all of my books and files are. Fridays and Saturdays will continue to be my days off (except for those frequent Saturdays when special events are scheduled). Be patient with me and the BAUUC staff as we move around for the next few months. If you need to make an appointment with me, please call me at 832-978-7463 or email at minister@bauuc.org. You can also leave a voicemail for me at the church, 281-488-2001.

It's very good to be back!

Matt

We Welcome All with Open Minds and Open Hearts

Welcome to the Bay Area Unitarian Universalist Church website. We hope you will visit us in person soon! We are a growing, family-oriented congregation that celebrates rich religious and personal diversity.

We are committed to the worth and dignity of every person; a free and responsible search for truth and meaning; and a respect for all that exists. We recognize many sources of revelation, affirm the wisdom inherent in all religions, and do not adhere to a single scripture or doctrine. As we say each Sunday at Bay Area, "Love is the doctrine of this church, and service is its prayer."

If you are looking for a community where you can explore your spirituality without fear of being told exactly what to believe, BAUUC is the place for you. Regardless of your ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, religious and spiritual upbringing, or any other characteristic of who you are, you are welcome here!

Sunday Services are moving due to construction starting May 11th (Mother's Day) and extend approximately until June 15th (Father's Day). There will be a single service at 10:30 am, with Religious Education and child care available.  View a map to the Space Center Intermediate School
The Bay Area Unitarian Universalist church (BAUUC), Houston, TX (NASA area), a liberal and expanding faith community and 2006 Southwest District nominee for "Mid-sized Breakthrough Congregation," seeks a full-time DLRE to start July 2008. BAUUC recently broke ground on a RE building expansion that will double the size of the current facility. The DLRE professional will provide programming for adults, youth, and children. The ideal candidate will be an experienced credentialed UU DLRE with a passion for UU principles. For more information about BAUUC browse this website. Follow this link for more information about the Director of Lifespan Religious Education position.

As you may have already noticed, our construction project is underway!

Unitarian Universalist women and other progressive women of faith are being summoned to Houston, February 27-March 2, 2009, to share and learn ways we can work together to improve women’s lives around the world. This will be the first major gathering of UU women since WomanQuest in 1990, and the first ever gathering that specifically includes international UU women.
