Growing in Spirit and Service Together
Bay Area Unitarian Universalist Church is a progressive faith community located in the Clear Lake area of greater Houston.
We hold diverse beliefs but are united by our faith in the worth and dignity of every person, our commitment to serving our neighbors around the corner and the globe, and the call to build a world defined by love and justice. As we say each Sunday at Bay Area, "Love is the doctrine of this church, and service is its prayer."
We hope you will join us as we strive to grow in diversity, compassion, and service, creating a church where all people are encouraged to freely explore their theology and spirituality. This congregation is welcoming of people of all ethnicities, sexual orientations, socio-economic statuses, ages, and religious upbringings. So, come for a visit, bring the family or a friend, and be transformed this Sunday!
Our Transition Minister, the Reverend Samuel Schaal
The Rev. Samuel Schaal is our Transition Minister. He serves our church through July 2012 as a transition specialist, helping us to sharpen our ministries in the time between settled ministers.
Rev. Sam is a second career minister. With undergraduate work in journalism, he first worked in public relations and corporate communications. He entered Unitarian Universalist ministry after graduating cum laude from Perkins School of Theology at SMU in Dallas. He has served congregations in Texas, Wisconsin and Missouri. Helping congregations and individuals find spiritual integrity—so that one’s purpose and mission comes from deep within one’s heart and yet connects to others—remains his passion in ministry. He is especially interested in the rich historical legacy of Unitarianism and Universalism, and how that shapes who we are becoming as a progressive and diverse religious movement called to, in the words of our congregation’s mission statement, “Change Lives and Heal Our World.”
Wellspring, a UU deepening class, starts in September. Have you heard about Wellspring? Wellspring offers spiritual deepening within our Unitarian Universalist tradition, an opportunity for learning more about ourselves and our faith through a year-long small group experience. There are five interconnected components: commitment to a daily spiritual practice, monthly spiritual direction (self-reflection with a guide), small group meetings, reading about the theological and historical foundations of our faith, and putting our faith into action. After a day-long opening retreat on Sept. 10, Wellspring will meet two or three times a month through May 2012. Wellspring study and discussion topics include:
