Applying Our UU Principles

UUs who want to apply our principles and theologies to personal, congregational and community life are sometimes attracted to peacemaking – which involves processing conflicts in ways that increase trust, security, harmony and mutual understanding. The District Peacemaking Workshop at Bay Area Unitarian Universalist Church on April 4 -6 will be led by UUs who link our tradition with attitudes and skills that create alternatives to the hurt and harm (violence) prevalent in our culture.

Blessed are the peacemakers.UUs who want to apply our principles and theologies to personal, congregational and community life are sometimes attracted to peacemaking – which involves processing conflicts in ways that increase trust, security, harmony and mutual understanding. The District Peacemaking Workshop at Bay Area Unitarian Universalist Church on April 4 -6 will be led by UUs who link our tradition with attitudes and skills that create alternatives to the hurt and harm (violence) prevalent in our culture.

Rev. Thea Nietfeld deepened her study of nonviolence on a Gandhi-focused walk in India a few years ago. She is a certified mediator, trained with Pace e Bene nonviolence service, and facilitated peacemaking workshops at SWUUSI for the last 3 summers. Thea will guide opening and closing segments that link peacemaking with our tradition and encourage applications.

Rev. Susan Smith is our District Executive who was active on the Commission on Social Witness as the Peacemaking Study Action Issue moved through initial processes to passage at the 2006 General Assembly. Her partner in the Consensus and Group Decision-making Workshop will be Rev. Ron Robinson from Turley, who is Executive Director of UU Christian Fellowship.

The Workshop will be Friday from 7:30 pm to 9 pm; Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, followed by dinner and a circle dance, and Sunday 9:30 am and again at 11:30 am. The cost for the congregation is $100; each individual pays $50. 4 meals are included.
