As the Director of Lifespan Religious Education at BAUUC, I have more than once been asked, “Why does a church that doesn’t have a creed need religious education?”  The most succinct response I’ve found to that question is Rev. Rebecca Parker’s statement that, “For Unitarian Universalists, learning is the fundamental spiritual practice.”  We learn in order to grow, to expand, to deepen.  We learn in order to make better decisions about what we believe and how we will live.

Religious Education is the process by which we all learn together, from each other, how to build the Beloved UU Community.  It's where we teach what we know and learn what others in our faith community know.  It's where we transform ourselves into a whole that's greater than the individual diversities that make up its parts.  It's how we become Unitarian Universalists.  This is a central responsibility of our church - to teach, to lead, to learn.

Here at BAUUC our programming for all ages is designed to provide deepening in:

UU Identity, including:

  • UU History
  • Principles
  • Family practices
  • Religious literacy – tree of religions as they relate to Unitarian Universalism
  • Liturgical awareness
  • Awareness that the work we do at BAUUC is ministry.

Personal spiritual or self awareness practices, including:

  • Sitting in silence
  • Journaling
  • Mindful service
  • Education
  • Work with spiritual directors or mentors

Living in community, including

  • Healthy dialog and conflict management
  • Working with Covenants
  • Multi-generational experiences
  • Expectations of service to the church community in shared ministry
  • Practicing openness to learning from our sources and the paths of others
  • Respect for process and good governance

We’re glad you’ve found us.  Whoever you are, whatever spiritual or philosophical path you’re on, you’re welcome here.  If you have questions or would like to discuss our programming, please feel free to contact Julie Lambert or call the church office.

In faith,

Julie Lambert, Director of Lifespan Religious Education
