Community Service - "Serving Humanity in Fellowship"

Mission

The mission of the Community Service Committee is “to identify several major needs each year in our local and world communities for which the BAUUC congregation and other sources provide money and services.”

Goals

To research, vote on, and solicit funds and services for local and non-local projects to help needy people.

Volunteer Opportunities

Many opportunities are available at BAUUC to help make the world a better place. To become involved with the any of the projects below or to sit in on a BAUUC Community Service Committee (CSC) meeting (typically on the 2nd Sunday from 10:30-11:30 in RE room) or bring a project to the attention of the committee, contact the CSC chair: Jeff Boxell.

On-going volunteer events with BAUUC involvement:

  • Every Tuesday from 4:30-9pm: Assisting at the ICM Resale Shop, 118 W. Bay Area Blvd., Webster, Texas, at the intersection of Bay Area and Highway 3. Work includes sorting and testing donations.
  • 4th Saturday of each month: Food for Seniors Day at the ICM Food Pantry 151 Park Avenue, League City:
    • 8-9AM – bag groceries for home-bound and disabled seniors;
    • 9-10:30AM, delivery of groceries.

July 2008 to July 2009 Accomplishments

  • Continued support of Interfaith Caring Ministries (ICM) programs:
    • ICM board member Jane Malin represents BAUUC on the ICM board of directors.
    • ICM Resale Shop - Continue to provide services for ICM’s Resale shop. BAUUC members donate their time each week to sort donations and test appliances.
    • ICM Groceries for Seniors - Continue to provide services for ICM’s grocery distribution to needy elders. BAUUC members donate their time one Saturday a month to pack and distribute the groceries.
    • ICM handyman services - Continue to provide handyman services for elderly and disabled people in the community.

  • Continued support of Boys & Girls Harbor.
    • Group purchased graduation gifts for B&G high-school graduates.

  • Started a new FINCA (Foundation for International Community Assistance) micro-credit bank in Jordan funded by a contribution from Bridgeway Partners through the CSC and money raised through our church's FINCA fundraiser. This marks the fifth FINCA bank sponsored by BAUUC joining others in Guatemala, Mexico, Haiti, and Malawi. Visit http://www.villagebanking.org/ for more information.
  • For the 5th consecutive year, CSC collected and shipped warm clothing and other goods to rural Navajos who live in the most remote place in the U.S., near the Utah/Arizona border. Sam Yazzie and his Navajo family distributed the items over the Thanksgiving Holidays.   • BAUUC supported BATP (www.bayareaturningpoint.org), a local shelter providing recovery solutions services for survivors of family violence and sexual assault and facilitates violence prevention strategies for societal change in partnership with our community. BAUUC members participated in the bi-annual BATP food drive, collecting goods to feed the members at their shelter. BAUUC volunteers also assisted in story-reading program with the BATP youth.   • BAUUC supported the Houston-based resource SEARCH and House of Tiny Treasures (www.searchproject.org) dedicated to helping over 10,000 homeless men, women and children get off the streets and into jobs and affordable housing. We collected over 100 pairs of gloves and 98 hats on our BAUUC Christmas Mitten Tree.
